about

Ridgemont High is the self indulgent rock n roll fantasy of a silly boy from Newcastle, Australia. He treasures his records, he buys too many cheap guitars, he has never read Kerouac but likes to bring him up in conversation, and cradles every punk fanzine this side of Philly.

As an ode to everything gloriously out of touch and analogue he scoured the internet for years trying to find someone offloading a four track tape recorder. What appealed to him about it? Well, the lo-fidelity was certainly a plus for low effort recordings. Somehow it’s possible to make an entire piece of shit drum kit in a garage sound somewhat okay with just one microphone. (Or he thinks so at least)

Initially once purchased from two old ladies in a block of flats the cassette recorder sat dormant, and he lost the power cord during a house move. Now though, with the influence of bands like Guided By Voices and The Cleaners From Venues, the boy has began recording in his garage with the cassette contraption.

Over the course of five days in March 2021 he churned out a total of 6 short but finished songs, four of them being covers. The purpose of these covers is not to be taken seriously at all. It’s in part learning how to operate the machine and make it sound good, and also the opportunity to pay tribute (and take the piss out of) some brilliant songs from the past.

There are plenty of wrong notes, sometimes the bass is too loud, and the drums sound like they’ve been funnelled through a car exhaust. Don’t listen to it. But here it is just for history’s sake.

Within the simulation Ridgemont High perform live as a four piece band and still aren’t very good. The boy writes the songs and the others turn them into rock and/or roll. So far this project has seen the release of 2019’s solo EP ‘Scared Of Living’, a split-EP cassette with another shit band called Seahouses from Wollongong, and a Live EP recorded in the basement of a scary terrace house. These covers here are once again an example of Ridgemont High as a solo act, featuring the boy playing all the instruments in his garage.

The real Ridgemont High band hopes to have a (much better) new single coming out this year (it’s already done) and the boy is considering more DIY solo releases (unfortunately).
